A local businessman disappears during a meal shared by old friends. When he is later found dead, DI Munro must cut through a densely-woven web of deceit to find out why.
The Carduccis and the Buchanans have been best of friends for years, but simmering under the surface are long-held jealousies and disagreements that only the criminal affairs of the men have kept at bay.
When, during a meal, Angus Buchanan steps out of the house to fetch a bottle of wine from the car and subsequently disappears, the police are quickly informed. But when the most likely explanations are ruled out, detectives Munro and West are called upon to investigate possible foul play.
When Buchanan is later found, having suffered a violent death, pathology rules out natural causes and it becomes clear that a terrible murder has occurred.
Faced with the lack of real cooperation from the parties involved, who are clearly protecting their nefarious business interests, the man responsible for Buchanan's death is found relatively quickly. But when he pretty much laughs in the face of the detectives' accusations, Munro and West realise that there must be much bigger fish to fry.
In an investigation that takes them as far afield as Oslo, Norway, and into the past of a troubled Polish man, Munro's dream of a tranquil life in the countryside is further put on hold, and the ever ravenous Charlie West, must continue to battle the ways and mores of a Scottish backwater without losing her cool.
With more red herrings than a Norwegian fishing boat in the sunset, DUPLICITY is a highly entertaining cosy Scandinavian-style murder mystery that will appeal to anyone who enjoys a gripping read where guessing the identity of the murderer is key.

This novel was abysmal. I read a lot of crime thrillers, but there was nothing thrilling about this. The characters were so banal and the crime was unbelievable. The suspects owned up at the drop of a hat and a lot of detail added in was just for padding. The Scottish vernacular grated on my nerves and added nothing at all to the story. I had the impression that the detective worked on his own as there was no coherence between members of his team. In fact I dont think he has any idea how investigations go. Total waste of time. i cannot think of one redeeming feature.Product details

DUPLICITY A compelling Scottish murder mystery Pete Brassett Books Reviews
Once again another great story. I am on to the next book. Looking forward to reading it and finding out who tried to kill D I Munro. Thanks for a wonderful read. Nanci Townsend
Another home run! A great read that you have to read to the end to find the killer. The characters are well rounded and endearing. The local dialect is a delight! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
If you enjoy a gruesome mystery, engaging and unique characters, and an ending that will leave you wanting more, this story is for you! I have read it twice in the past six years once on its own and again before I read Brassett’s two subsequent mysteries in this series. Both reads were simultaneously invigorating and haunting. While the second and third stories are quick, quirky, and satisfying reads, Duplicity scores this mystery lover’s five stars. The characters are first rate creations and deserve your attention. Enjoy.
Hated this book, I only read about 15 pages. Although I am from Scotland, I find it very tiring reading the Glasgow dialect.
Readers who enjoy "silly" mysteries will like this. Wouldn't recommend this to those who like brooding settings, bleak outcomes, and earnest detectives, as I do.
I couldn't possibly begin to explain why these books amuse me ... Perhaps because they are such quick and easy reads, the flawed characters, DCI Munro's sarcasm and sense of humor, trying to figure out why Munro thinks Sargeant West has the makings of a great detective? I can tell you that it is not because they are brilliant writing. Yet I've read all four of them in succession; each immediately following the last. Call me crazy.
Mr. Brassett's latest offering in Inspector Munro/West series is a fun/quick read. The curmudgeonly Munro is pretty much the only multi-dimensional character in the novel. Since "Duplicity" is essentially a procedural, it is a bit disappointing that the reader has to accept a lot of illogical plot points in order to enjoy the read.
